Bernice LaVerne (Griffin) McCastleMarch 11, 1947 ~ October 24, 2017 (age 70)
Bernice Lavern Griffin was born on March 11, 1947 in Stuttgart, Arkansas. She was the third of four children born to the late Christine V. Earvine and Anderson Griffin. She received her formal education from Holman Elementary and Holman High School in Stuttgart, Arkansas.
Bernice moved to San Diego with her husband, W.P.C. McCastle, and her daughter, Beatrice McCastle, on December 24, 1970.
Bernice Lavern was blessed with three children: one son; John Lee Jr. and two daughters; Beatrice McCastle (deceased 1974) and Tachayetta E. McCastle.
After separating from her husband, the marriage was dissolved. Bernice worked as a Home Health Care provider for over 25 years. Bernice provided routine home health care needs for her neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Al Thomas, prior to their demise. She also assisted the late Mr. James McNeely, her significant other (boyfriend/gentleman friend), a landlord, with overseeing his properties and helped with the upkeep.
Bernice enjoyed traveling and seeing new exciting things. She enjoyed going to the movies and spending time with her friends. Bernice was a caring person when it came to her family and friends. If she hadn’t heard from members in the family, she would call to check on them. She enjoyed cooking. Her favorite dishes were fried chicken and roast beef and mashed potatoes. Her favorite TV shows was Mama’s Family, Perry Mason, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son and “The Young in the Restless”. Faithfully, she would call a special family friend, Elaine Ealy, every Friday and they would discuss what happened during the week on the shows.
In 2014 Bernice moved from San Diego, California to Conway, Arkansas to be home and close to her brothers and sisters. It had long been her desire to move back home because of her failing health. Bernice enjoyed social gatherings at home with her family and neighbors in the community and eating out at Golden Coral restaurant.
On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, Bernice Lavern Griffin-McCastle, was called home after battling kidney failure and cancer for many years. Bernice was preceded in death by her mother and father, Christine V. Earvine and Anderson Griffin; her brother, Michael Earvine and her daughter, Beatrice McCastle.
